The NAACP Image Awards is an exciting, star-studded salute to the best in TV, film, literature and music. Honorees, presenters and performers have included many of the major celebrities in America as well as international political figures and dignitaries. There are 60 competitive categories in the fields of motion picture, television, recording and literature. There are also several honorary awards including the Chairman’s Award, President’s Award and Vanguard Award.

To understand the importance of the NAACP Image Awards, it has to be placed in a social and historical context. Ideas and images create the belief systems that control our individual and societal actions. When it comes to forming ideas, reinforcing stereotypes, establishing norms and shaping our thinking nothing affects us more than the images and concepts delivered into our lives on a daily basis by television, motion picture, recordings and literature.

Hosting the ceremony for the 6th time in a row is actor and funnyman Anthony Anderson.

Leading the pack among 2019 nominees (see below) is to no one's surprise - Black Panther with a total of 13 nods

Joining Black Panther in the outstanding motion picture category is “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” and “The Hate U Give.”

In the TV category, “Atlanta,” “Black-ish” and spinoff “Grown-ish,” “Dear White People,” and “Insecure,” were nominated for comedy series. Drama series nods were given to “How To Get Away With Murder,” “Power,” “Queen Sugar,” “The Chi,” and “This Is Us.”

The nominees for Entertainer of the Year were announced in early February - with a viewer's choice roster of star heavyweights that includes Beyoncé, Chadwick Boseman, Ryan Coogler, Regina King, and LeBron James.
